High teas have made a huge resurgence in the past few years. The tradition began in the 19th Century, when it was customary until then, to only have breakfast and supper. Anna, the 7th Duchess of Bedford, took to having tea and snack in her rooms, and later invited friends to join her. The practice proved so popular, that other social hostesses quickly picked up on the idea, and afternoon tea was moved to the drawing room.
High teas are now offered in many establishments throughout Australia, and are used as popular fund raisers, as well as just an excuse for friends to get together. Nothing makes a high tea more authentic, than beautiful English china, vintage cutlery, and lovely vintage linens or supper cloths. Add a plate of scones, some jam and cream, a few sandwiches, and you have the perfect high tea.
